5D Lai Ka Chun

Good morning principal, teachers and fellow schoolmates,
I am Lai Ka Chun of class 5D. This year, one of the major concerns of our school is respect. In the past few weeks, there are talks on respect for schoolmates, teachers and parents. Today, I would like to talk about respect for life.
Why should we respect life? Every single life is precious as we all live once only and there is no take two. All living things have a moral status and on account of that should not be killed or harmed. I believe none of you have killed anybody. However, have you ever harmed others? It is saddened to find news reports of different forms of bullying in schools in Hong Kong. According to a recent survey conducted by a local social enterprise, one in three teenagers aged 12-18 has experienced bullying in the past six months. A few years ago, a video clip recording that a boy was being beaten up by a group of schoolmates was uploaded in YouTube and alarmed the whole territory. So far, few, if not none, has been done to help the victims and bullying is still prevalent in schools. Bullying causes not only physical harm to the bullied, but also casts an unfading shadow on their hearts. Some feel depressed and desperate and may even resort to committing suicide. Should we respect others’ lives, we will never bully others but respect them.
Apart from not bullying others, what can we do to respect life? A quote from Nobel Prize winner, Albert Schweitzer, once said, “My life is full of meaning to me. The life around me must be full of significance to itself. If I am to expect others to respect my life, then I must respect the other life I see.” In other words, we should love our neighbor as ourselves. Never should we look down on others because of their social status, educational background, ethnicity, so on and so forth. We should try to embrace the differences among us and treat others with love. Never should we ignore the life of animals. It is heartbreaking that here is news about animal abuse especially the stray dogs and cats. Life of animals also deserves our respect. We should help protect their lives by not abusing| or abandoning them if we are owners.
All in all, respect others if you want to be respected. Every life is precious and we should try our very best to respect life no matter humans or animals. That’s all for my sharing. Thank you.
