Good morning principal, teachers and fellow schoolmates. I am Emily Chiu of class 6D. To start with, I would like to ask you all a question. Have you ever thought about what makes a good chief executive?

From my point of view, being judicious is of the utmost importance. As a chief executive, the major duty is to lead the government and implement the law, where decision-making ability and insights are necessary. A foresighted chief executive can not only contribute to the economic development of Hong Kong, but also provide a politically stable living place for every citizen. In addition, a close and amicable relation with foreign countries can be maintained. Therefore, having a chief executive who is visionary and sagacious is the key to the competitiveness and future success of Hong Kong.

Apart from having a vision, problem solving skills are vital. As we all know, Hong Kong is facing severe social problems, such as an aging population, an acute shortage of land for housing and a wide gap between the rich and the poor. These problems have stirred up controversy among people from all walks of life in the city. In order to maintain social stability, policies should be made to tackle the above problems. Hence, problem solving skills are essential for a leader.

All in all, since the chief executive is the head of the government of Hong Kong, he/she plays an irrefutably crucial role. Whether Hong Kong can still be proud of its position as a leading international financial centre entirely depends on the capability of our chief executive.

What about you? What do you think are the important qualities that a chief executive should possess? That’s all I want to share today. Thank you.
