Good morning principal, teachers and fellow schoolmates. I am Carmen Ng of 5B.

I am sure all of you agree that it is not easy to be a student nowadays as we have to handle a large number of assignments and tests. What do you think is the key to success? For me, it is important to stay consistent in learning. You may wonder what it means to be consistent. It refers to the quality of working hard over time without giving up easily. Today, I would like to share with you how to stay consistent in learning.

First and foremost, having a positive attitude helps us stay consistent. We may feel upset and want to give up when we fail a test or exam. I still remember the first time that I experienced failure. When I was in primary four, I only got one mark in the first English exam as I was not good at English at that time. It made me feel so frustrated. However, my English teacher encouraged me to stay positive as it enables us to see the bright side of life. As the saying goes, failure is the mother of success. We should stay positive when we experience failure and see it as an opportunity for us to improve. Ultimately, it leads to success.

What’s more, we should set a clear and achievable goal. With a clear goal, we will have the motivation to keep working hard no matter what challenges we face. Many successful people have shown us the importance of setting a goal and working hard consistently. Take Thomas Edison as an example. He failed again and again until he finally succeeded to invent the first light bulb in the world. No matter how many times he failed, he was still willing to try since he had a clear goal. If he had given up after failing a few times, we would not have enjoyed the benefits brought by his great invention. His experience inspires us that we have to keep our goal in mind and consistently think of ways to achieve it.

Apart from staying positive and setting a clear goal, it is important for us to have better self-management skills. Imagine that you have set a goal for yourself but do not have sufficient time, do you think you can achieve your goal? Definitely not. Therefore, in order to stay consistent in learning, we should construct a priority list and allocate our time according to the importance of each activity. We should spend more time on the activities which benefit our learning, such as doing revision, reading and even getting enough sleep at night. On the contrary, there are activities which hinder us from working hard consistently, like using our smartphones and playing computer games too often. We have to make sure that we will not get addicted to these activities. That’s why it is essential for us to manage ourselves well.

To conclude, being a student is not easy, but there are certainly ways which lead us to success. Being consistent is one of them. Remember the three tips that I have shared with you today – stay positive, set a clear goal and have better self-management skills. As it is the beginning of the second term, I hope that the above tips are useful for you. That’s all of my sharing today. Thank you.
