Good morning principal, teachers and fellow schoolmates. I am Renee Szeto of class 6B. It is my honour to deliver a speech today. Our school belongs to the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, a prestigious charitable organization in Hong Kong. It offers various affordable and quality social services, ranging from educational services to medical and health services to the general public. Today, I will talk about one of its missions – ‘To promote education and to nurture youngsters’.
Tung Wah has been all along upholding its mission to provide education for children from various backgrounds. Apart from offering medical and health services, the hospital has diversified its services to provide free educational services. In the past, many underprivileged and disadvantaged children were not able to afford the tuition fees, not to mention possessing higher education qualifications. To allow more students to enjoy learning opportunities, the hospital established its first school in 1880. The school, which eventually adopted modern teaching methods in the 1920s and 1930s, was recognized as one of the leading organizations that provided education for children in poverty. Currently, Tung Wah has owned 50 education services centres which are located all over Hong Kong. It has been running 18 secondary schools, 13 primary schools, 15 kindergartens, two special schools for mentally disabled children, and one educational psychological services centre. In addition, in response to the community’s demand for tertiary education places, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals established the Tung Wah Group of institutes for secondary school leavers with degree and sub-degree courses.
Tung Wah’s mission in education is to provide comprehensive and multifarious services for youngsters. It enables them to develop their full potential and eventually to make contribution to the community. Its motto “Diligence, Frugality, Loyalty and Trustworthiness” is the guiding principle in the moral and intellectual development of the students. It strives to promote proper values and a positive attitude towards life and encourage students to live life to the fullest. What’s more, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals puts more emphasis on nurturing students to develop a good learning attitude and effective self-learning skills. Instead of transmitting subject knowledge to students, Tung Wah’s teachers make a great effort to stimulate student’s motivation, assisting them in developing effective strategies in learning.
Not only does Tung Wah provide basic quality educational service, but also values the all-round development in teenage generation. Students are provided with ample learning opportunities through a wide variety of activities, including academic, cultural and leisure, service, interest, sports and music domains as well as uniform groups. All these activities help cultivate an all-round and balanced educational environment conducive to the moral, intellectual, physical, social and aesthetic development of students. Furthermore, in order to cultivate their sense of responsibility, students are encouraged to take part in volunteer work and engage in community service. Therefore, students can learn to be responsible citizens and help make the world a better place.
All in all, Tung Wah promotes education and nurture students to be all-rounders. I am proud of being a Tung Wah student. Hope all of you can treasure precious learning opportunities and strive to be high flyers. Thank You!
